Finally! We have encountered each other in this tiny corner of internet. You are free to call me Winston. I chose this name for myself in high school, inspired by the main character in 1984, one of my favorite books. You might be curious about my Chinese name, which is Canen, but it’s pronounced differently than you might think. Nobody wants to be called like a weapon or the Japanese company! So, let’s go with Winston and that should keep everyone happy 🙂
I still remembered the day when I started watching my first American TV series, Prison Break, in 2008. That cold winter afternoon marked the beginning of a decade-long chapter of my life featuring addiction to English contents and my desire to be a part of it.
Luckily, my wishes came true. I started working for a media localization company called Iyuno in the summer of 2016. By then, I was already a member of several non-profit subtitle fan groups, wandering in the grey area and covertly doing the work that some of our supporters would describe as “Promethean”.
For humans, the fire is a gift by Prometheus. But in God’s perspective, it’s a theft and the perpetrator must be punished. So, during my years in Iyuno, while I was doing 100% “legit” localization work, our government began cracking down subtitle fan groups to protect intellectual property and advance other political agendas.
Although the cracking down didn’t directly affect me, it makes me more determined than ever to stay in the localization industry. I have gained experience in subtitling, dubbing, project management and team leading. Thanks to this job, I got admitted to AE TLM program at MIIS, marking the beginning of the next chapter of my life featuring career advancement and employability improvement.
